| Option | Typical time to downtown DC | Good to know |
| Private chauffeur | 45–70 min | Met at baggage claim, price agreed in advance, door to door |
| Taxi or ride-hailing | 45–70 min plus the wait | Long, so fares add up; prices rise at busy times |
| MARC or Amtrak train | About 30–40 min on the train | Shuttle bus from the terminal to BWI rail station, then a ride from Union Station |
The drive
Most cars take the Baltimore–Washington Parkway (I-295) or I-95 to the Beltway. Outside rush hour, downtown DC is about 45–55 minutes away. Weekday evenings heading south can push it past an hour, and Friday afternoons are the slowest of the week.
BWI is also the easy airport for Annapolis (about 25–35 minutes), Columbia and Baltimore. For Bethesda or Northern Virginia, allow an hour or more.
The train option
A free shuttle runs from the terminal to the BWI rail station, where MARC commuter trains and Amtrak run to Washington Union Station. It's good value if you travel light and your train times line up, but you'll still need a ride from Union Station to your final address, and MARC service is limited at weekends and late at night.
Why people choose a car from BWI
- Late arrivals: no waiting for the last train or a shuttle.
- Luggage and families: one car from the curb to your door.
- Executives and guests: met by name at baggage claim, with the flight tracked.
- Going to Virginia: the train only reaches Union Station; a car goes straight to Tysons, Arlington or Alexandria.
